Foods with benefits

I really believe that you are what you eat. What you put in your body really makes a difference. There are specific foods you can have to boost your skin, hair and nails, and some that just make you feel good!

Instead of spending money on expensive creams when my skin isn’t at it’s best, I go straight to the seafood aisle of the supermarket. Try and get wild salmon if you can as it contains more nutrients than farm salmon. Salmon does have an acquired taste so I season mine with olive oil, sea salt and pepper to disguise the fishy taste. Salmon contains Omega 3’s which help your skin, strengthens hair and nails- trust me, you will notice the difference if you have a piece of salmon 3 times a week.


Olive oil
High in antioxidants, low in bad cholesterol and gentle on the digestive system, I use olive oil on salads (the best salad dressing I’ve found is lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper mixed together), pasta (with pieces of salmon and cooked spinach), pizza (drizzle this onto the base instead of tomato sauce) and baking (I use olive oil instead of vegetable or canola oil in cakes and muffins).


Spinach contains Omega 3 fatty acids which helps boost skin health, bone health, joint health and bowel health. I love to make a salad with spinach and kale (high in iron, antioxidants and vitamins), red capsicum and feta (high in protein and calcium) with the above salad dressing recipe of lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper.


More than any beauty product on the market, I love making masks from foods.

Face mask
My favourite mask to make only has two ingredients: 2 teaspoons of cocoa and 2 teaspoons of greek yoghurt. Mix them together and slather onto your skin. Leave for ten minutes and wipe away before cleansing. Cocoa contains high amount of antioxidants- 3 times more than the amount found in green tea!


When I want a cheap facial, I cleanse before rubbing olive oil on my face, wetting a face washer with warm water and lying down for ten minutes with the face washer covering my face. This process helps the olive oil absorb even faster, which gives your skin a huge moisture hit. I do this once a week.


I love a good exfoliator, and this one is so good for your skin. Mix a tablespoon of ground coffee with 2 tablespoons of natural greek yoghurt and scrub your skin gently. Coffee contains antioxidants and reduces puffiness.


For pimples and dry skin
Olive oil- it might sound weird putting an oil onto oily skin, but here’s the thing- oil is more readily absorbed by the skin than lotions and topical creams. If you are putting this on a pimple, rub a small amount of olive oil onto the affected area and leave for ten minutes. Lightly cleanse your face afterwards. I use olive oil on areas of dry skin too. I like to put my feet in a bowl of warm water with 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Leave for ten minutes, wash and dry. If you have a special occasion and a pimple decides to rear it’s head (it’s always the way), grab an ice cube and rub it over the affected area for 5 minutes. This will calm the pimple down.


Oh, and once I’ve done the above to make me feel great in the skin I am in, I like to end it with a slice of cheesecake!
